Salt On My Tongueis a multi-sensory letter to the artist’s grandmother with whom she doesn’t share a common language. A video work and public performance explore her Greek heritage and simultaneously offer an opportunity to reflect on how food connects to places, people and culture beyond verbal language alone. What begins as a tentative endeavour to remember a formative experience turns into a complex process of reconnecting with her distant family and a reconstructed, dislocated identity. The art works reflect on the fluid concept of selfhood and the role food plays in the construction of belonging.
Yvonne Buchheim is an artist and educator working in public and social contexts, often questioning the role of art within everyday life. She has exhibited widely and was awarded a monograph publication for her longterm Song Archive Project. She taught at the University of the West of England for 10 years before moving to Cairo in 2012 where she continued with educational and art projects. She coordinated the Arts & Culture field at the Cairo Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 2015/16 and co-curated Spring Sessions, a learning programme and artist residency in Amman, Jordan in 2017.
